Abstract:

Grow Green is a research and development project from the Horizon 2020 programme, "Demonstrating innovative nature-based solutions in cities” project group. The project is realized by a consortium of 23 partners from 9 countries, whose leaders are three European cities - Manchester, Valencia and Wroclaw. In Wroclaw, the project is coordinated by the City of Wroclaw and realized in cooperation with Wroclaw University of Environmental and Life Sciences and Wroclaw Agglomeration Development Agency.

The main objective of the project is to build urban climate resilience, therefore, in the cities covered by the project, a catalogue of demonstration solutions was created to combat heat stress, increase biodiversity and enable the use of rainwater. In addition, the introduced solutions serve the urban residents and improve the quality of life in housing estates.

The aim of the project is also to assess the introduced solutions’ performance in terms of climate change adaptation and mitigation in cities, rainwater management improvement, biodiversity increase, improving the quality of life of urban residents and fostering economic growth, in accordance with the principles of sustainable development.

For this purpose, in years 2018-2022, monitoring of project areas was carried out, divided into two stages – “pre-greening monitoring” - carried out before the introduction of nature-based solutions, and final – “post-greening monitoring” - carried out for 2 years after the completion of works.

The monitoring of project areas was carried out by the Grow Green project Team, led by prof. dr hab. inż. Jerzy Zwoździak, Project Manager on behalf of Wroclaw University of Environmental and Life Sciences.

In the years 2023-2027, as part of Grow Green project durability, post-project monitoring will be carried out - further scientific research that will allow to assess the long-term benefits of introducing nature-based solutions in cities. This research is conducted by the Landscape Architecture Department of Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences.
