Biological sciences

Research topics:

  • development of innovative therapy strategies based on stem cells and biointelligent carriers

  • implementation of innovative treatment protocols including preconditioning stem cells, transfer of extracellular vesicles and the regulation of gene expression

  • biotransformations and chemical synthesis of compounds with important biological properties which are useful in the pharmaceutical, agri-food and cosmetic industries

  • the use of biocatalysis to functionalize natural and synthetic chemical compounds in order to enhance / change their biological activity

  • biotechnological application of bacteriophages in human and veterinary medicine

  • genetic modifications of plants for improving their functional properties

  • biorefining of various types of waste (e.g. plastics, lignocellulosic raw materials, glycerin, municipal waste, agri-food industry waste) as a renewable source of carbon and energy for microorganisms (including genetically modified), in order to reduce environmental pollution and deliver added value compounds

  • determining biological activity (antitumor, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, cytotoxic, antioxidant, antidiabetic, hemolytic) of natural and synthetic compounds

  • description of the molecular mechanism of the interaction between natural and synthetic compounds and biomolecules (lipids, proteins, DNA), and biological membranes and cells

  • study of the systematics, biology, ecology and phylogeny of plants and animals

  • research on eco-evolutionary aspects of host-parasite relationships

  • research on biological and cultural variability of human prehistoric, historical and present populations and the analysis of palaeopathological changes in bone and teeth structures of humans and other mammals

  • human health and ontogenetic development in the context of environmental and genetic backgrounds; the occupation health and physiology of humans in the modern technical environment
