Technische Universität Wien
Technische Universität Wien is Austria's largest technical and scientific university. It offers a broad spectrum through its 18 Bachelor, 31 Masters and 3 Doctoral study programmes and its many university courses. Research at TU Wien is focused on five focal areas. These five pillars are Computational Science and Engineering, Quantum Physics and Quantum Technologies, Materials and Matter, Information and Communication Technology, and Energy plus Environment. They represent strengths and skills of TU Wien going back many years, and they strengthen its profile in international competition. Within these key areas, work is carried out on an inter-disciplinary basis and the research spectrum is being constantly developed.
The institutes at TU Wien are very successful when it comes to securing highly sought-after public funding and conducting research projects alongside sponsors from industry and commerce and/or the public sector (third party funds). A number of collaboration projects are embedded within the institution in various forms. For example, the University is involved with a number of competence centres, networks, projects and Christian Doppler laboratories and plays a major role in the Austrian Science Fund’s (FWF) priority programmes.
Technische Universität Dresden
Technische Universität Dresden is one of the largest technical university in Germany and is among the leading and most dynamic universities in the country. As a university with 18 faculties in five schools, TUD offers a broad variety of 122 degree courses and covers a wide research spectrum in the Research Priority Areas (RPAs) Health Sciences, Biomedicine & Bioengineering, Information Technology & Microelectronics, Smart Materials & Structures, Energy, Mobility & Environment as well as Culture & Societal Change.
Since 2012, TUD is officially one of the eleven “Universities of Excellence”. Its core elements are the Institutional Strategy “The Synergetic University” with the unique research alliance DRESDEN-concept, the Clusters of Excellence “Center for Advancing Electronics Dresden” (cfaed) and “Center for Regenerative Therapies Dresden (CRTD) as well as the Graduate School “Dresden International Graduate School for Biomedicine and Bioengineering” (DIGS-BB). Third-party funding increased from EUR 102.7 million (2005) to EUR 257,7 million (2016); annual patent applications from 71 (2004) to 131 (2016). “Knowledge builds bridges” – this is TUD’s motto. And through its unique course offers, its research projects and networks, TUD does build bridges between scientific disciplines, between the industry and science, between east and west, the municipality and the university, and between generations. Its Internationalisation Strategy “TU Dresden – connected to the world” comprises international university partnerships with selected universities such as King’s College London, TU Delft, as well as Wrocław Science Region and Prague Science Region.
Imperial College of London
Imperial College of London is a leading university in the United Kingdom, offering world-class education and research in the field of science, engineering and medicine, with emphasized application in industry, commerce and healthcare. ICL employs 8,000 employees and educates over 14.7 thousand students on all degrees of study.
The University has consistently been evaluated for years as one of the best universities in the world, in 2016/2017 according to "The World University Ranking" 3rd place in Europe, 8th in the world; 2nd place in Europe and 12th in the world on the list of "Top 100 Innovative Universities" (2016). ICL is an institution with the largest number of high-quality scientific publications among British universities. Faculty of Engineering, which is among the best worldwide, consists of 10 Departments, including the Department of Bioengineering, which has been consistently receiving distinctive assessments of the conducted research. In the last REF evaluation (2014) 95% of research projects have been recognized as outstanding and leading at a global scale.
