Action plan for achieving climate neutrality at the Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences for 2023-2050
The Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences joined the Race to Zero campaign on the 22nd of November 2022. Our university has committed to halving its greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and achieving climate neutrality by 2050. Our university's Race to Zero campaign goals are overseen by the Race to Zero Campaign Participation Programme Preparation Team appointed by Rector Prof. Jarosław Bosy and chaired by Prof. Anna Chełmońska-Soyta. The team was established by Order No. 87/2022 of the Rector of the Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences dated 4th of April 2022 (updated 1st of December 2022).
One of the basic conditions for the university's participation in the Race to Zero for Universities and Collages campaign is the diagnosis of the situation in the units involved and the development of an action plan. At our university, in January 2023, we started to identify and inventory elements of the functioning of the university units in terms of their impact on greenhouse gas emissions (carbon dioxide and methane). This was the basis for the 'Report - baseline 2022. Identification and inventory of selected elements of the university's operations in terms of their impact on GHG emissions’. This report formed the basis for the development of an Action Plan for the gradual decarbonization of the University.
The strategy planned for the University as part of the Race to Zero Campaign included in this "Action Plan for achieving climate neutrality of the Wroclaw University of Life Sciences for 2023-2050" is in line with the goals and directions set by the resolution adopted by the UN General Assembly entitled "Transforming our world: 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development".
The Action Plan sets out the following strategic objectives:
- Short-term goal: to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030
- Long-term goal: achieve climate neutrality by 2050
Planned actions have been identified for 7 areas:
- Sustainable and low carbon campus.
- Sustainable and low carbon transport.
- Research and development for climate.
- Sustainable nutrition for climate and human health.
- Education and outreach for the climate.
- Climate change adaptation and disaster prevention. Monitoring these changes.
- Monitoring the implementation of the Race to Zero plan - monitoring the carbon footprint.
In each domain, there are outlined precise objectives, scheduled tasks for execution, estimated timeframes for implementation, and identified key stakeholders involved in executing these tasks. It is assumed that as the Plan is implemented, both the Specific Objectives, the Tasks to be implemented and the timeframe for their implementation will be modified to reflect the results of GHG emission reductions reported in the annual Action Plan Report.
