UPWr on the podium of the "cycling round and round" contest

The campaign orchestrated by the City of Wrocław was a remarkable success, attracting over 1,400 participants who traversed a staggering 450,000 kilometers - a journey extending from Earth well past the Moon. Amongst this impressive feat, the Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences took third place on the podium.

The staff members and the university itself have achieved high rankings in the Wrocław "cycling round and round" campaign. Promoting sustainable development stands as one of the core missions of UPWr.

The primary objective of the contest, as articulated by its organizers, is to challenge the stereotype of bicycles being solely a seasonal mode of transportation. Consequently, the campaign is held during the autumn months. Equally significant is the promotion of sustainable commuting methods, such as bicycles, for travel to work, school, or university.

For UPWr, this contest presents a prime opportunity to further its commitment to sustainable development, a key pillar of the university's ethos. Cycling daily has become a fundamental aspect of the student culture and more. Ranking third in the "cycling round and round" campaign, the Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences ardently advocates for sustainable development through the encouragement of cycling activities. This achievement reflects not only competitive success but also a collective dedication to a healthy lifestyle and environmental stewardship.

During the contest, participants logged their daily commutes in an app over two months – October and November, culminating in an awards ceremony on December 13th. The university itself excelled in the cycling competition, as did two of its staff members. Elżbieta Kurpiewska from the Financial Department attained 14th place, while Andrzej Bielecki from the Centre for Operation, Repairs, and Investments secured 4th place in the individual rankings.

– This is a truly excellent initiative. I needed little persuasion to participate since cycling is my year-round mode of transportation. However, I did encourage my husband and daughter to join, and they too cycled with dedication in October and November – says the UPWr staff member who won 14th place.

UPWr, as a leader in environmental and life sciences, recognizes the importance of ecological balance. The university endorses initiatives such as "cycling round and round" which not only advocate for a healthy lifestyle but also contribute to a significant reduction in carbon dioxide emissions. Through their daily cycling commutes, UPWr students and staff play an active role in minimizing the carbon footprint. The university's commitment to environmental sustainability is further demonstrated in the Race to Zero campaign, in which the Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences actively participates. This global initiative aims to halve greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and achieve climate neutrality by 2050.

Likewise, UPWr's membership in the EU GREEN alliance aligns with its commitment to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals set forth in 2015.

The organizers of the "cycling round and round" campaign underscore that cycling is not confined to any specific season. It serves not only as a recreational activity but also as a versatile mode of transportation throughout the year. This approach helps dispel the notion that cycling is merely a seasonal means of transport, illustrating that sustainable development can be a year-round pursuit even at the local level.
