UPWr Leads the Way in Achieving Sustainable Development Goals

This marks the second edition of the prestigious QS World University Rankings: Sustainability, and the first time that the Wroclaw University of Environmental and Life Sciences is participating. The results demonstrate that UPWr is a pioneer in implementing and promoting the idea of sustainable development, not just in Poland, but in this part of Europe as well.

The QS World University Rankings: Sustainability focuses on the methods universities employ to address the world's major environmental, social impact, and governance challenges. Through research, teaching, strong management, and community engagement, universities have the knowledge and capabilities to drive sustainable development, serving as a guarantor that future student generations will be educated in the spirit of the values carried by sustainable development goals.

UPWr in the Forefront

The growing importance of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) is evidenced by the fact that around 700 institutions participated in the first edition of this ranking, and more than twice that number in this year's edition.

The ranking currently covers three categories: environmental impact, social impact, and the newly added governance category. Institutions can be evaluated separately in each of these categories, in all three, and overall.

17 Sustainable Development Goals introduced in 2015 by the UN

This year, UPWr made its first appearance in the ranking, immediately securing the 6th position in Poland and 1st among natural science universities in the overall standings. Globally, it ranks 699th and 291st in Europe.

In the environmental impact category, UPWr similarly holds the 6th position in the country and 1st among natural science universities. In the governance category, UPWr ranks 2nd in the country, just behind the University of Warsaw, and 12th in social impact, tied with SGGW.

Sustainable Development Only

Our high rankings are undoubtedly influenced by our membership in one of Europe's most important university alliances, EU GREEN. Achieving sustainable development goals, as stipulated in the consortium's charter, is a key aspect discussed at the highest levels of the most influential organizations and international alliances such as the UN, WHO, or the European Union.

The future depends on the actions we take today. Universities are in a unique position, unlike any other institutions, to play a decisive role in the process of education and learning. They can inspire and influence positive changes at local, national, and global levels through community engagement and skilled management. UPWr is part of this global effort.
