Veterinary students with an international scholarship from FVE

Two students from UPWr were distinguished in the European scholarship program conducted by the Federation of Veterinarians of Europe (FVE) and MSD Animal Health. The program supports future veterinarians in their education and professional development.

Among the recipients of the Veterinary Student Scholarship Program were two students from the Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences , Natalia Brągiel and Sarah O’Keeffe. The selection of scholarship recipients was based on their overall activities, involvement in animal and local community welfare, as well as recommendations from professors. Over 200 applications were received by the committee, with a total grant pool of 50,000 PLN.

- My decision to become a veterinarian stems from a deep love for animals and a desire to care for their health and well-being. Furthermore, veterinary medicine offers unlimited opportunities for learning and development in various fields, such as surgery and diagnostics, making each day unique and full of new challenges - says Natalia Brągiel, acknowledging that the greatest joy and reward for all encountered difficulties comes from the well-being of animals. As she says, passion and the opportunity to influence the lives of others motivate her to act. - The scholarship will give me the chance to gain valuable experience and expand my knowledge — I want to specialize in reproductive surgery in Spain - adds the veterinary student.

The Federation of Veterinarians of Europe is an organization that brings together approximately 300,000 veterinarians from 39 European countries. It is involved in activities aimed at improving animal health and welfare, as well as environmental protection through the promotion of the veterinary profession. MSD Animal Health, on the other hand, distributes medicines and vaccines, as well as knowledge and technology, to ensure the improvement of animal health, well-being, and productivity. It also supports the ideas of One Health and One Welfare, which concern the impact veterinarians have on the environment and people, as veterinary medicine affects what happens around us—such as antibiotic resistance and animal health management, whose products are part of our daily diet.

Scholarships aim to support students in acquiring the knowledge and skills necessary for a career as a veterinarian. This program has been implemented since 2016 and has so far reached over 360 students from across Europe, including nearly 30 from Poland.

- I love animals — hence my passion for veterinary medicine. I want to support their health and have a positive impact on both their lives and the lives of their owners. When looking for the right university, I paid attention to Poland — it stood out with its English-language teaching programs, high education standards, and positive reviews from international students. After visiting Wrocław, a city full of life and charm, I had no doubt where I wanted to continue my education. The scholarship offers financial support that will allow me to fully dedicate myself to my studies and engage in additional internships - says Sarah O’Keeffe, a student from Ireland, emphasizing that this will enable her to delve into new areas of veterinary medicine. - I think one of the biggest challenges currently is the growing antibiotic resistance, and I would like to address this issue in the future - adds the laureate.

As organizers emphasize, the scholarship program is primarily an investment in the future of veterinary medicine and an example of the commitment of both organizations to promoting animal health, food safety, and protection against diseases transmitted by animals.
