UPWr moves up in the 2023 CWTS Leiden ranking

UPWr was once again ranked among the world's best universities in a list prepared by the University of Leiden. We are leaders in the gender category – which measures the percentage of women in the number of publication authors. We were also ranked high in natural sciences, physical sciences and engineering.

In terms of the number of total authors of publications in life and earth sciences, UPWr is ranked 364th in the world and 8th in Poland. The number of women in this field, in turn, places us 217th in the world and 7th in Poland.

We ranked highly in the percentage of female authors in all publications:

  • All sciences - 13th in the world, 8th in Poland,
  • Biomedical and health sciences - 22nd in the world, 9th in Poland,
  • Life and earth sciences - 36th in the world, 17th in Poland,
  • Mathematics and computer science - 94th in the world, 5th in Poland,
  • Physical sciences and engineering - 21st in the world, 12th in Poland,
  • Social sciences and humanities - 49th in the world, 8th in Poland.

The average percentage of women among all authors of publications for all disciplines at UPWr stands at 52.3%.

Scientific impact of publications

UPWr was ranked 312th in the world and 7th in Poland in the category relating to the scientific impact of publications in the field of life and earth sciences. This is an increase of as many as 11 positions in the international ranking and one in the national ranking. In the index for the number of publications among the 10% most frequently cited in a given field, we ranked 519th in the world and 7th in Poland.

Collaboration

In the indicator related to broadly defined collaboration in writing publications, the university is ranked 482nd in the world and 8th in Poland in the field of life and earth sciences.

In terms of the percentage of publications prepared in collaboration, we are ranked as follows:

All sciences - 16th in Poland (1st among life science universities),

Biomedical and health sciences - 13th in Poland (1st place among life science universities),

Physical sciences and engineering - 20th place in Poland (3rd place among life science universities).

The participation rate for all disciplines is almost 75% of publications in collaboration and 33% in collaboration with foreign countries.

Open access to publications

Of all the indicators identified in the ranking, the category of open access publications is the most noteworthy. The number of UPWr scientists' publications in open access in the field of life and earth sciences guaranteed us 354th place in the world (this is 40 places higher compared to the previous year!) and 8th place in Poland.

The average open access publication rate across all disciplines for the university as a whole is 66.4%.

About the ranking

The CWTS Leiden Ranking is based entirely on bibliometric data (Web of science database) with respect to scientific disciplines, which include biomedical and health sciences, life and Earth sciences, mathematics and computer science, physical science and engineering, and social sciences and humanities. The list is based on a compilation of publications from 2018-2021.

In addition, the ranking distinguishes four categories:

  • scientific impact,
  • collaboration,
  • open access to publications,
  • gender of authors.

This year, 1411 universities from all over the world participated in the ranking, including 37 from Poland.
