Research projects receive funding in the Miniatura 6 competition
Dr. Magdalena Domańska, Dr. Karolina Rak, Dr. Magdalena Rychlicka, Dr. Paulina Śliwka, Dr. Agata Wojciechowicz-Budzisz and Prof. Grzegorz Zaleśny have been awarded funding for research projects in the Miniatura 6 competition of the National Science Centre.
The UPWr scientists are to receive nearly PLN 300,000 in research grants from the Miniatura 6 competition. Their projects, which are the basis for further research, will deal with bacteriophages in the treatment of diarrhoea in companion animals such as cats and dogs, the use of quinoa sourdough for baking various types of bread, the study of bacteria in sludge from sewage treatment plants, the preparation of ferulic acid with antioxidant, antimicrobial, antidiabetic and anticancer properties, and the development of recipes for healthy milk-based drinks with the addition of spices and with various antioxidant and immune-enhancing properties, among others.

Dr. Domańska to study sewage
As part of the Miniatura 6 competition, Dr. Magdalena Domańska from the Institute of Environmental Engineering is to carry out a research project called 'Treated sewage as a source of information on microorganisms involved in the transformation of nitrogen compounds'.

Dr. Rak: – Oat milk with spices is a nod to tradition
As part of her research project, Dr. Karolina Rak from the Department of Human Nutrition will be developing recipes for healthy drinks based on oat milk with spice blends.

Dr. Rychlicka: – I'm looking for a way to make supplements more effective
Dr. Magdalena Rychlicka from the Department of Food Chemistry and Biocatalysis wants to obtain a preparation of ferulic acid in the form of a nanoemulsion, which could be used as a supplement in the prevention of civilisation diseases such as cancer and diabetes.

Dr. Śliwka studies bacteriophages in veterinary medicine
In her research, Dr. Paulina Śliwka from the Department of Food Biotechnology and Microbiology at the Faculty of Biotechnology and Food Science will be looking at bacteriophages that can be used to treat diarrhoea in companion animals – dogs and cats – caused by the pathogenic anaerobic bacteria Clostridioides difficile and Clostridium perfringens.

Dr. Wojciechowicz-Budzisz and quinoa
For the coming year, Dr. Agata Wojciechowicz-Budzisz will be carrying out a project called 'Characteristics of bakers' sourdough prepared on the basis of pseudo-cereals with special malts' – red, white and black quinoa will be the pseudo-cereal from which she will obtain sourdough used as a base for baking bread.

Professor Zaleśny and taxonomy
Professor Grzegorz Zaleśny from the Institute of Environmental Biology at the UPWr has received funding for a project called 'Next generation taxonomy' – a new tool in the study of the functioning of parasite-host systems using the example of the Cotylurus genus parasites (Diplostomoidea: Strigeidae)".
