Green urban corridors – a climate awakening

Dozens of parks, squares, and local green spaces connected by green corridors, as well as numerous solutions related to green and blue infrastructure, which enhance the resilience of urban areas to climate change, are among the outcomes of the Polish-Norwegian project involving researchers from UPWr.

In April 2024, the project 'Green Urban Corridors – A Climate Awakening in Konin' was completed. It was carried out from 2021 to 2024 by the city of Konin in partnership with the Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences, the Polish Green Roof Association, and the Norwegian Association for Green Infrastructure. The project aimed to increase the city's resilience to adverse effects resulting from climate change, adapt to these changes through investments in green and blue infrastructure, and raise public awareness about climate change and its associated challenges.

As a result, green urban corridors (23 segments) with a total length of 17 kilometers, two pocket parks, and seven green urban courtyards were created, each characterized by a theme such as water, air, and humans as part of nature.

On April 25th, a conference was held to conclude the project, where its outcomes were summarized by, among others: the Vice Mayor of Konin – Paweł Adamów, a representative from the Ministry of Environment and Climate – Angelika Kamińska, and from UPWr, Dr. Justyna Rubaszek, head of the Landscape Design and Green Infrastructure Department at the Faculty of Landscape Architecture.

Dr. Marta Weber-Siwirska led the entire project from the Faculty of Landscape Architecture, representing UPWr and as the president of the Polish Green Roof Association. Dr. Ewa Walter led the individual tasks. Other contributors to the project included Dr. Justyna Rubaszek, Dr. Anna Bocheńska-Skałecka, Prof. Katarzyna Wróblewska, Dr. Radosław Tatko, and Dr. Jacek Burdziński.

The projects developed aimed to showcase model solutions that increase water retention, positively affect the microclimate and biodiversity, and improve the quality of life for residents of Konin. Their implementation is an impetus for further changes and adopting a new approach to urban space development.

The project implementation was made possible through participation in the 'Environment, Energy, and Climate Change' program and was co-financed with nearly 8.7 million PLN from EEA funds from Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway, and over 1.5 million PLN from the state budget.
