UPWr in CWTS Leiden Ranking 2020

In the ranking based on the Web of Science database, UPWr ranked 347th in the world and 8th in Poland in terms of the scientific impact of publications, and 330th and 3rd respectively taking into account gold open access publications.

The ranking made by the Dutch University of Leiden is one of the largest and most important university rankings worldwide. It is based entirely on the data available in the Web of Science database. The recently published list for 2020 was based on the analysis of the publications from 1,176 universities from around the world in the years 2015-2018.

The ranking takes into account 4 indicators: scientific impact, collaboration, open access to publications and authors’ gender. Each of the indicators is studied for the following areas: Biomedical and health sciences, Life and earth sciences, Mathematical and computer science, Physical science and engineering, Social sciences and humanities and for all the sciences collectively.

The University of Environmental and Life Sciences in Wrocław distinguished itself primarily in the field of Life and earth sciences, but it also fared well in two other fields corresponding to its research areas, i.e. Biomedical and health sciences and Physical science and engineering.

Scientific influence of publications

In the field of Life and earth sciences, UPWr took 347th place in the world and 8th in Poland – this result takes into account all the University's publications. However, considering the number of articles in the 10% of the most cited publications in the same field, we rank 466th in the world and 4th in Poland.

Collaboration in writing publications

In the number of all cooperative publications in the field of Life and earth sciences, UPWr ranked 490th in the world and 9th in Poland.

We also gained the 9th place in Poland thanks to same field publications, prepared in international cooperation and – separately – in cooperation with industry.

Open access to publications

The number of open access publications by UPWr scientists in the field of Life and earth sciences gave us 453rd place in the world and 7th in Poland.

The ranking also takes into account the proportion between the number of open access publications and the number of publications in general, and here UPWr did well in three specific areas and in general:

  • Biomedical and health sciences – 389th place in the world and 4th in Poland
  • Life and earth sciences - 417th place in the world, 7th in Poland
  • Physical sciences and engineering - 430th place in the world, 6th in Poland
  • All sciences – 381st place in the world, 8th in Poland

Gold open access publications, i.e. published in reliable open access journals, gave UPWr 330th place among all universities in the world and 3rd place among Polish universities in the field of Life and earth sciences. In the relation of gold open access publications to all UPWr publications, we gained the following positions:

  • Biomedical and health sciences – 77th in the world and 2nd in Poland
  • Life and earth sciences – 86th in the world, 6th in Poland
  • Physical sciences and engineering – 20th in the world, 1st in Poland
  • All sciences – 40th in the world, 3rd in Poland

Authors’ gender

In terms of the number of all authors of publications in the field of Life and earth sciences, UPWr was ranked 467th in the world and 8th in Poland. Female authors of same field articles did very well – UPWr women scientists were ranked 247th in the world and 8th in the country.

When it comes women’s share in all scientific publications, UPWr took excellent positions in all three fields:

  • Biomedical and health sciences – 45th in the world, 15th in Poland
  • Life and earth sciences – 55th in the world, 22nd in Poland
  • Physical sciences and engineering – 10th in the world, 8th in Poland
