Saint-Germain-des-Prés church was selected to honor King Jan Kazimierz in appreciation for his contributions to intellectual development in Wrocław – one of the most important academic centers in Poland. This selection has historical roots, in 1669 King Jan Kazimierz, one year after his abdication, accepted an invitation from French King Louis XIV and held the prestigious title of abbot at the church until his death in 1672.

The ceremonial unveiling of the memorial plaque took place on 21 January 2011 to commemorate the 350th anniversary of the founding the University. It was preceded by a ceremonial Eucharist attended by representatives and authorities from Wrocław and Paris, rectors of Wrocław Universities, representatives of the Church from Paris and Wrocław as well as Professor Roman Kołacz, the rector of Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences.

The foundation of the memorial plaque is also connected to the founding of the Wrocław Academic Union. Rectors of seven Wrocław Universities signed the agreement concerning this matter on 27 September 2010 and King Jan Kazimierz is to be the Patron of the Union.
