Monitoring water utilisation in cities
In November 2012, nine institutions from five EU countries started carrying out the research-development project, "Implementation of the Water Footprint approach to monitor, evaluate and improve the water use in urban areas (URBAN_WFTP)”.
The project will be carried out by a consortium consisting of: University of Padua (Italy), Giacomo Rumor Foundation – Veneto Productivity Center (Italy), Vicenza District (Italy), University of Innsbruck (Austria), Alpy Ltd. (Austria), INNOVA Eszak-Alföld Regional Development and Innovation Agency (Hungary), IHK Chamber of Commerce and Industry for Nuremberg and Central Frankonia (Germany), University of Environmental and Life Sciences in Wrocław, Municipal Water Supply and Sewage Company in Wrocław. The University of Padua is the leading partner of the project, which will take 25 months and will be financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). Its total cost will amount to 1.6 mln Euros, including 1.266 mln Euros from the ERDF.
It is planned to design a methodology for determining a Water Footprint index in urban areas, to prepare a strategy for water use improvement for three newly formed laboratories and to examine their efficiency. Moreover, there will be initiatives promoting balanced water use, training sessions and support for implementation of the designed methodology.
The opening meeting took place on the 17th and 18th December at the University of Padua. Professor Stanisław CZABAN – Director of the Institute of Environmental Engineering was appointed as a member of the Management Committee and Doctor Wiesław FIAŁKIEWICZ from the same institute is going to work in the Technical Committee.
