GIS Day 2012
On November 13th, the Institute of Geodesy and Geoinformatics of the Faculty of Environmental Engineering and Geodesy and the Geoinformatics Student Scientific Circle from the Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences, organised lectures and thematic workshops on the GIS software and technology, as a part of this year's GIS Day celebrations.
“At present, it is easier to detail areas of human activity where data containing spatial information is not used, than to enumerate these areas where this information is essential. A few such areas include administration, geology, mining, transportation, forestry, health care and crisis tools. It should be noted that in 1960, there was just one person in the world who used GIS; in 2000, there were 2 million users, and by 2005, the Google Earth application had been downloaded 250 million times”, said Dr. Adam Iwaniak from the Institute of Geodesy and Geoinformatics of Wrocław’s University of Environmental and Life Sciences.
During the GIS Day celebrations at the University of Environmental and Life Sciences in Wrocław, there was a lecture by Krzysztof Borowski from Esri Polska – ArcGIS Online company, concerning the issue of personalized maps on the Internet, and a lecture by Michał Nikodem from the Apogeo Company, on GPS mobile applications. There were also workshops concerning laser scanning, 3D modeling, geodetic technology and digital photogrammetry.
“Standards, similarly to parachutes, work best when they are open”, said Dr. Adam Iwaniak, encouraging the take up of studies at the University of Environmental and Life Sciences, and of taking on the challenges that creators of spatial information face in the Web 3.0 era.
