Geodesists will support designing intelligent models for weather forecasting

The GNSS Meteo team from the Institute of Geodesy and Geoinformatics is working on an intelligent system for weather forecasting based on signals from GNSS satellites. The main goal of the project carried out together with RMIT University in Australia is to lower the risk and consequences of natural disasters.

– An increase of dangerous weather events is usually attributed to climate changes. In Poland we do not face such extreme events as in Australia, however, we have to cope with intensive rainstorms and blizzards, strong winds and their consequences – says Doctor Witold Rohm from the Institute of Geodesy and Geoinformatics from the University of Environmental and Life Sciences in Wrocław.

The ability to monitor and forecast the development of storms, in particular those which may potentially cause heavy rainfall, depends on information on water vapor distribution.

– The amount of water vapor in the troposphere is very significant in terms of determining the intensity, time and range of rainstorm – says Doctor Rohm. – The main target for our team is to create a model of weather forecasts. The programme prepared in Poland will allow our Australian colleagues to obtain data which will help to improve the quality of numerical weather forecasts.

On Monday, December 8th a seminar on ”The workshop on tomography and applications of GNSS observations in meteorology” took place, which was attended by representatives of teams participating in the project as well as scientists specializing in the field of GNSS meteorology in Poland. Among those invited there were representatives of the University of Environmental and Life Sciences in Wrocław, the University of Wrocław, the Military University of Technology, the University of Warmia and Mazury, the Technical University of Ostrava, The Polytechnic Institute of Guarda and the Belgian Institute for Space Aeronomy.
