Genetics – science of the future
Genetics is the science of the future – Professor Alina Wieliczko, Vice-Rector for International Relations and Regional Cooperation, said in opening statements on behalf of Rector Professor Roman Kołacz. These words marked the beginning of a three-day genetics conference, including topics on many aspects of scientific achievements regarding animal genetics in both farm and wild animals.
The conference opened on September 18 in the Hall of Pope John Paul II.
In the first days plenary session, there were lectures by invited speakers: Professor Henner Simianer from Georg-August-University in Goettingen in Germany, Professor Maria Sąsiadek from Wrocław Medical University, Doctor Andres Legarra from INRA in Toulouse, Doctor Luis Varona from University of Zaragoza in Spain and Doctor Miika Tapio from the Agricultural Research Center in Jokioinen in Finland.
Professor Henner Simianer presented a paper on the accuracy in genetic forecasting of complex features based on experimental data, Professor Maria Sąsiadek spoke about the genetic origin of cancer and its therapeutic implications, Doctor Miika Tapio spoke about a history of domesticating sheeps and Doctor Andreas Legarr presented genome map comparisons of four species of animals.
The conference was a significant event in genetic circles that deal with animal breeding – said Doctor Heliodor Wierzbicki, chairman of the organizational committee.
