First European Student Conference TRIZ

Participants of the first European Student Conference TRIZ, which took place from 24th to 27th February at the University of Environmental and Life Sciences, discussed systematic approach to problem solving.

The meeting was organized as a part of Tempus project: Tempus: English For All (EFA). Teachers and students from Israel, Cyprus, Italy, Germany, Great Britain and Poland attended the event.

During the three day meeting the students participated in different workshops and presented their reports. Seven of the presented reports were from the University of Environmental and Life Sciences. Although there was a great variety of issues discussed during the meeting, still the way of defining problems and suggested solutions focused on solving them on the basis of TRIZ (the theory of inventive problem solving TIPS) logic. It turns out that there are about 40 fundamental methods used for resolving technical contradictions. Instead of ready-made “elements of solutions mosaic” we are provided with the set of fundamental ways of problem solving. So is it possible to learn inventiveness?

Doctor Siergiej Ikowienko, Professor of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), President of MATRIZ – International TRIZ Association was a special guest of the Wrocław meeting. The conference was led by Doctor Sara Greenberg from Holon Institute of Technology in Israel, the coordinator of the project.

The University of Environmental and Life Sciences in Wrocław, as the only university in Poland, takes part in a project “Development of Thinking Skills” as a part of the Tempus program. Classes, which enable students to learn about methods connected with a new scientific field of prakseology – invention science, are conducted by Ewa Hajdasz and Paweł Buksak from the Foreign Languages Department. The classes are based on materials of Doctor Sara Greenberg „Development of thinking skills” and materials prepared by the Center for Distance Education of the University of Environmental and Life Sciences in Wrocław.
