Designing „without barriers”

What should be done in order to make landscape architects design green areas that are accessible to disabled people? In what way can we stimulate imagination and sensitivity? How can we recognize what creates barriers for a wheelchair?

The answers to these questions were the exercises “through experience” which were prepared by three doctoral students of the University of Environmental and Life Sciences in Wrocław, graduates of the Institute of Landscape Architecture: Anna Popów-Nowicka MSc, Monika Brodzka MSc, who is this year’s winner of the 1st place in a competition „Wrocław Magnolia” and Kamila Adamczyk MSc. They rented wheelchairs which were used for field exercises that took place on Wednesday 27 May in the Botanical Garden. The next classes took place on Friday 29 May in the area of the Science Center near Grunwaldzki Square and in Szczytnicki Park.

The originator of the „through experience” field exercises, which are to teach students designing „without barriers”, is Professor Andrzej Drabiński, Vice-Rector of the University of Environmental and Life Sciences in Wrocław and Director of the Institute of Landscape Architecture.
