Biodiversity and Trees – a Project by Landscape Architects and the XVII High School
On Friday, October 13, 2023, an extraordinary event took place at the University of Environmental and Life Sciences in Wrocław. It was named "Tree BioBlitz – Tree Biodiversity Event." This gathering was dedicated to educating high school students about biodiversity and the role of trees in the urban environment, as well as engaging them in citizen science.
The project itself is an initiative from the Atlantic Technological University in Ireland and is carried out within the scope of the EU GREEN alliance, specifically under work package 5 (WP5), focusing on engagement for sustainable societies and economies.
Tree BioBlitz, or how to protect trees in the city?
The XVII High School students participated in the event under the guidance of Dorota Milewska-Skotny. They were introduced to the fascinating world of urban trees and learned how they could actively contribute to tree preservation. Additionally, they had the opportunity to take part in interactive workshops during which they could identify and inventory the trees growing on the campus of the University of Environmental and Life Sciences in Wrocław. The event was led by Dr. Kornelia Kwiecińska and Dr. Robert Sobolewski from the Department of Landscape Architecture. Organizational support was provided by Anna Borkowska-Szwarc from the Project Implementation and Settlement Center, who, along with Dr. Katarzyna Tokarczyk-Dorociak, is responsible for the coordination of WP5 at UPWr.
Locally and continentally
The "Tree BioBlitz" event is not just a local initiative – it also takes place in other European countries such as France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Sweden, Romania, and Germany. Research results collected during this day will be shared on a common online platform, allowing students from different countries to learn about the achievements of other student groups.
