Scientists from the University of Environmental and Life Sciences in Wrocław and Stem Cells Spin S.A. Company are taking part in the research that may contribute to the production of medicines and medical products from antler stem cells. The first laboratory has just started operating.
On the 23rd April Professor Roman Kołacz – Rector of the University of Environmental and Life Sciences in Wrocław and Grzegorz Smak – the president of the Stem Cells Spin S.A. Company ceremonially opened the first Biocervin project laboratory – “Creating prototypes of medical products based on the materials generated from the antler stem cells”.

The specialist research-production laboratory, which was constructed for the needs of the project, is its key element – this modern and very well equipped lab, fulfilling the requirements of the Good Manufacturing Practice, will serve to create medical products based on stem cells obtained from deer antlers, and it may be a breakthrough in the regeneration medicine.
The stem cells are currently used in the treatment of many kinds of diseases and injuries. These are most often living cells obtained from the patient’s bone marrow or fat tissue, however, the length of time needed for the multiplication of these cells limits the possibility of their use. This problem may be solved by the stem cells obtained from growing antlers of the Red Deer.

Veterinary clinics of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Environmental and Life Sciences in Wrocław have been carrying out research on the possibility of regenerating pig’s spinal cords, and treating the degeneration of heart muscles, horses’ respiratory systems, pigs’ gastric ulcers and mares’ infertility.
The project is worth 65 million PLN. The financial means have been obtained from a subsidy of the National Center for Research and Development (the biggest subsidy granted by the NCRD in 2013) and from the European Regional Development Fund.
