The lower quality of semen results in, among others, changes in sperm cell activity and a loss of cholesterol, which subsequently leads to premature capacitance (a process, which should normally take place in female reproductive organs). However, unlike mammals, the semen of birds does not undergo capacitance and thereby do not demonstrate premature hyperactivity.

– The topic concerning the modification of cholesterol in birds’ semen is an interesting one. Moreover, it’s a subject that’s not been fully explained as of yet – says Agnieszka Partyka. – the research results will allow for the creation of procedures to process semen before cryoconservation. I think that due to this we will be able to achieve a better ratio of survival and activity in thawed sperm cells.

Someday it may actually come to fruition that the research on rooster semen will have an influence on improving the methods used for controlled procreation. Theodor Fontane, German playwright and pharmacist, once shared a sarcastic remark that some roosters think that the sun rises because of them. Who knows, maybe it’s true?

The research concerning the improvement of both the vitality and motility of gametes after cryoconservation has received financing in the “Iuventus Plus” program. Doctor Agnieszka Partyka from the Department of Reproductive and Clinic of Farm Animals of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine will receive 124 thousand PLN for her research.

Young scientists under 35 years of age can take part in the „Iuventus Plus” competition. The submitted projects are required to constitute a continuation of their scientific research, whose results were published or accepted for publication in the leading world magazines listed in Journal Citations Report (JCR) or Reference Index for the Humanities (ERIH).
